Part Three; Chapter Two.

I really enjoyed reading this chapter. It was so interesting to me that after all he was doing, Winston still loved O' Brien. He still considered him to be his friend. He still enjoyed talking to him. In our society, Winston would be considered to be experiencing some kind of PTSD. There are many stories in our society where a victim can fall in love with their attacker because they literally are broken down so much emotionally that they don't know any different. In my opinion, that is what is happening right now to Winston. Also, he asks a lot of questions in the end that I think we are all wondering. Like, what happened to Julia? I would imagine she went through a lot of the same things that Winston did. All of the torture techniques that used with him were probably used on her as well. From the way O'Brien answers, it is easy to see that Big Brother does not exist. Big Brother is what the Party has created. Without a strong force like Big Brother, the Party would have no control. Right now I am thinking that Winston will be released and they won't kill him right now. I believe he is smart enough to act like he has been "cured" or that he will actually change his way of thinking. It is also very interesting to me that O'Brien is calling Winston insane. In all reality, O'Brien is the psychopath that is torturing people and changing their way of thinking.

  1. The correlation you draw between Winston/O'Brien and a victim/abuser is a relevant one. Keep that in mind as you prepare for the essay test. I love, however, that you still believe in Winston. Hope springs eternal...:)
